screen
supports the entry of non-ASCII characters via the
digraph
command. You can use octal or hexadecimal
numbers for the characters, if you know the numeric codepoints you want,
but the two-character mnemonics are probably easier to remember. The
characters can be entered in any order, so “a"
” is equivalent to
“"a
”; both will make an a-umlaut.
screen
's digraphs are a rough amalgamation of RFC 1345, with additional digraphs for many characters. They only cover the ISO-8859-1 charset. There is a patch for stricter and more-complete RFC 1345 digraph support at http://aperiodic.net/phil/screen/screen-rfc1345-digraph.patch ; that patch still only supports digraphs (RFC 1345 also includes a set of variable-length mnemonics), and the order of character entry is significant.
The digraphs that screen understands are as follows. RFC 1345 digraphs are in bold.
